General questions about psychotherapy:

Psychotherapy offers the client a cultural island cut off from the mainland of usual niceties. It is a refuge in which the client can be naked in the sunlight of ones own awareness…commitment to inward exploration and to growth is given priority over most of the restraints familiar in daily life.

How do you choose a therapist?
Since each therapist has their own unique style of practicing resulting from their theoretical orientation and life experience, it is very important that you interview a few therapists and choose one that you feel the most comfortable with.

What is your theoretical orientation?
The theoretical approach that I use combines depth psychology and existential psychology. Depth psychology acknowledges the unconscious processes such as dreams, archetypes, and myths and how they affect the psyche of an individual. Existential psychology focuses on finding meaning and purpose in an individual’s life and assists in answering the questions "Who am I?" and "What is my soul purpose?" It has been my experience that this unique combination of theories is very effective in helping individuals transform their lives.

How long does the therapy take?
Each case is unique and people have many different goals that affect the length of treatment.

Is therapy confidential?
In general, the law protects the confidentiality of all communications between a client and a psychotherapist—information is not disclosed without written permission.  However, there are number of exceptions to this rule.  Exceptions include:
  1. Suspected child abuse or dependant adult or elder abuse, for which I am required by law to report this to the appropriate authorities immediately.

  2.  If a client is threatening serious bodily harm to another person/s, I must notify the police and inform the intended victim.

  3.  If a client intends to harm himself or herself, I will make every effort to enlist their cooperation in insuring their safety.  If they do not cooperate, I will take further measures without their permission that are provided to me by law in order to ensure their safety.

Are you licenced?
Yes, I am licensed as a clinical psychologist PSY 22428 which means that I have successfully completed all requirements for the psychological treatment of individuals in the state of California. I am also licensed as a Marriage and Family Therapist MFC 36526, but this license is under inactive status at this time because my psychology license covers all my psychotherapeutic treatments and is the higher level license.
